Precautions

For safety sake, stay on the ground when you prune.

Use a ladder only when necessary.

Consider only those plants under 12 feet; let skilled arborists handle major jobs that involve tricky, often dangerous situations with bigger trees.

My forearm rule: never attempt to cut a branch that is bigger than your forearm, just below the elbow.

Be absolutely certain that your work area is free of electrical wires; reaching up or into a plant with pruning tools is dangerous if wires are present.

As with all tools, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for product use in order to avoid injury.

If pregnant, consult your doctor before attempting any garden project, especially one without gloves.

Use light colors and cover up for sun protection; long pants with gathered legs help keep out anything and everything.

To prevent scrapes and scratches, use arm protectors.

Prevent injury to the eyes with a pair of protective glasses or goggles. Some even come with magnifiers! p 24

Use a kneeling pad or individual kneepads to guard against rocks, stumps and whatever else is hidden.

Be mindful that children and pets should be kept at a safe distance from your pruning area.
