Excellent tools are essential for clean cuts and frustration-free pruning. The tools recommended below are superior quality and easy to use. They have been my favorites for years and are the backbone of my business.
1. By-Pass Pruning by Felco
The Felco line of hand pruners, made in Switzerland, cuts with precision and ease (up to 3/4 in. diameter branches). Sporting the familiar red handles, all parts are replaceable, extending their life indefinitely. Numerous models are made; some have rotating handles, some have longer blades, several are for lefties. Felco #6, my favorite, is designed for smaller hands; it is lighter in weight with shorter blades.
2. Mini-ratchet loppers by Florian

These loppers, made in the USA, are used for larger cuts (up to 1 1/4 in. diameter). Using two 19-inch handles, the mini-ratchet system works its blade easily through a large branch (with minimal effort from you).
3. Long-reach Pruners
These pruners are long versions of by-pass pruners extending your reach by up to four feet. This tool enables you to reach high places to prune or go deep into tight or unwelcome areas.
4. Saws
Two in this category are worth having:
Folding saws are very handy; a closed blade protects against injury when not in use.
1. Small, fine teeth make cleaner, more precise cuts.
2. Larger teeth cut bigger branches and limbs quickly.
3. Folding saws can be found at your area garden center.
Saws with extender poles enable more flexibility for large cuts in difficult areas of a plant.
1. It gives better leverage while pruning.
2. It allows the use of both hands if necessary. Florian makes two versions, made in America.
