Relax! Pruning, in moderation, does not kill plants. Acquaint yourself with some important information before your first cut.
First, remove only one-third of a plant per growing season. Heavier pruning triggers too much new growth which increases future pruning.
Here is how to maximize the blooms on your flowering plants:
Early blooming plants (ones that bloom before the middle of June) should be pruned after they bloom. Late blooming plants (ones that bloom from mid-June through Fall) can be pruned early in the spring before the flower buds are set for the season.
Position yourself close to the trunk when you begin to prune. Start by removing all debris (dead leaves, loose twigs, etc.) from the base of your plant out to the drip line (the outer edges of the branches). Pull weeds, vines and any other "invaders" that are competing with the plant for water and nutrients.
Remember to prevent pruning accidents:
a. Remain on the ground when you prune.
b. Use a small ladder only when necessary.
c. Avoid pruning trees with overhead wires running through them.
d. Give any high or risky work to skilled arborists (tree companies).
e. Use safety glasses.
